Home cooking is an art. And, the knife set is the most important tool set we need in our inventory! I often hear people say that a simple kitchen knife is all that’s needed in a normal home; that a knife set is only useful to professionals. What these people forget is that we, casual cookers, need to eat healthy cooked meals too. A knife set allows us to cook a large variety of meals. It is not a privilege, but a need in everyone’s kitchen!
What makes a kitchen knife set good?
There are a lot of things to be considered. I often rely on reviews of kitchen knife sets before I even sieve through the competition. Anyway, let me show you below the most important ones:
The knife types
I find myself using 4 knives most of the time. This does not mean the other knives are not needed. Each of them is designed for a specific task. But, no matter what I am trying to cook, these 4 are always part of my arsenal:
The chef knife – This is an all-in-one knife. Similar to the common kitchen knife, it is used for mincing, chopping, slicing, etc. There does not exist a kitchen knife set without a chef’s knife.
The pairing knife – It is known as the vegetable knife and it is used for peeling and trimming.
The utility knife – It is used for working on small pieces.
The serrated knife – It is used for cutting bread, delicate fruits, tomatoes, etc.
They can be considered the essentials. Make sure they are all part of your set!
This defines the sharpness, durability, maneuverability and the cost of the knives.
Stainless steel knives are usually cheaper. But, I find using them not comfortable. Though they have a long lifespan, they lose their sharpness quickly.
Carbon steel is a special innovative material. It offers good balance and control. They do not easily lose their sharpness, but they are more expensive and are not as durable (because of rust) as the stainless steel ones.
Ceramic knives are lightweight, durable and do not rust. They do not need to be sharped and maintained. However, they are the most expensive of the three choices.
Keep these things in mind when choosing a knife set. But, remember that everything depends on your needs and possibilities. Choose the one that best fits your cooking and eating habits!
